Common Barriers in Communication

Common Barriers in Communication
By Omar Rojas

These are the some of the most apparent causes and practical examples for communication barriers

Social and cultural barriers are pretty much the same but I would like to explain the biggest difference between those two obstacles in communication.

Social barriers “include the social psychological phenomenon of conformity; a process in which the norms, values and behaviours of an individual begin to follow those of the wider group”. I still remember when Mama says, where ever you go, do what you see. Some people just don’t want to realize that as soon as you move from your country and start living in other, there is not a chance to live for example here in Canada, in the same way as you used to live back in your country. Values don’t have to change but behavior may be. Look around and see what people do, I mean the right stuff, and follow them. That is a sign social integration.

Now in the other hand, the cultural barriers to communicate often arise when individuals in one social group have developed different norms, values, or behaviours to individuals associated with another group.

As is very well known, Canada is a multicultural country that deals every day with such barriers. They might seem hard to conquer but not impossible when the multiculturalism itself gives you more room to commit mistakes due to the integration process of new comers.
