Are you translating form your own language?

By Omar Rojas

Although it is normal within the process of learning a new language, some of your translations from your mother tongue can be very disrespectful to those who you want to communicate your thoughts. Here some ideas that have helped me in this kind a hard process to become bilingual in an academic environment. In writing assignments you might be using some words used in your mother tongue language that when you translate them means something different. Be so careful and always make your papers or assignments be read by someone else who can catch those common mistakes made by new learning language persons. Another tool you can use is the unknown book called "dictionary". Many people on these days is using translators gadgets and WebPages as an assignment tool. However, I strongly recommend you the use of internet dictionaries issued by well known Universities such as Cambridge, there is also an excellent tool called thesaurus which help us to find better academic words, or in the worse scenario go back to the Stone Age and get a hard copy from your near library.
